Swallowtail Butterfly

By pamelajean
This is another from my archives.

Itís hard to identify some butterflies when you can only see the ventral side of their wings, so I have never identified it, but had a go today and the best I can come up with is the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, Black-Form, Female (Papilio glaucus).

The male is yellow with four black "tiger stripes" on each forewing, but females may be either yellow or black, making them dimorphic (where the two sexes of the same species exhibit different characteristics).
If anyone knows better, please let me know.

You did well photographing it and also managing to identify it as well! A look on the internet shows it is native to Eastern United States so I would imagine rare in the UK

Some shot is this. Excellent capture. You may be right that it is the species of butterfly that you have identified it to be. But I would suggest that you send a copy of your picture to the Butterfly Conservation Group in your area for spot on identification and with the shot tell them exactly where and when you took it! This is ( most likely). the Polydamas Swallowtail! I prefers warmer areas--like Florida, rather than the Eastern varieties!

A very beautiful I mage!
