Sycamore Moth Caterpillar

By pamelajean
I thought a caterpillar series might be appropriate to follow on from the butterflies.
However, these will all be moth caterpillars, not butterfly caterpillars.
Most are archive images.

This extraordinary larva is one of the most colourful and hairy species to be found in the British Isles.
Itís thickly covered with very long yellow and orange hairs, with white spots outlined in black along the back.
Contrary to its bright colours, it is not poisonous, but may cause skin irritation if handled excessively.

Just prior to pupating, it has a habit of dropping out of trees, sometimes onto people walking below.
As the name suggests, it feeds on the leaves of the sycamore tree, as well as other deciduous trees.

Incredible, Pam it's like something you would use to get dust and fluff from behind radiators.
Fabulous colouration and detail.

I too immediately thought it was like some sort of brush!! 😁 It certainly is incredibly hairy, as well as very colourful. Excellent capture, Pamela, look forward to a few more 👍
