Takeoff (1984)

By woolybill1
This is the sort of thing I used to indulge in many, many years ago.

The vehicle leaving the ground is a 1.6 litre Volkswagen buggy, basically a steel spaceframe with a floor and the engine behind the driver. It's competing in an off-road trial in a disused pit in County Durham, anno 1984. As the object of the trial was to get across a difficult bit of terrain there was no need for speed - except for the Green Buggy, which spent most of its time in the air, thus becoming a firm favourite of all the spectators with a mental age of 10 or under (me, for example), who squawked with glee whenever it appeared over the horizon.

So inspired was I that I bought, rebuilt and competed in a buggy of my own for a few years. mrswoolybill took the photos then; I'll try to find some.

Tech: No recollection! Being me, I probably used a 35mm lens and stood close....

Nice action shot, Bill. I remember you boggling. Great verb, to boggle. I boggle, thou bogglest...

My buggy was a two-seater. I and my passenger used to play submarines rather than fighter planes. Proof to follow (when I can find the prints)!
