I'm sure the comments above have their value - but what I really like about this shot it you LOOK!
In spite of the fact that many might see it as bland it is in fact very honest in my opinion - and in terms of portrait photography no matter how wound-up, posed, exaggerated, in your face - no matter - if it ain't honest - it doesn't have a lot of value.
When I do photo shoots I often say to the sitter I want the 'gorilla look' -- need less to say

HONEST look --- no judgement - no opinion - just looking with all her/his soul behind the look - that in my opinion is the trick !! (young kids have it as well
