Tea or Tennis

By Duncan1960
I'm doing a short digital Photography course in the town, i was given the subject of Light and Dark, i took it this afternoon on the way back from it. I would like a pre- submission critque just to see if i'm in with a shout please? Metadata:-manual exp f4, @12mm, iso100.
I've done 3 variations of it as i was'nt sure about the horizontals and verticals going on in the image. Any help will be most appreciated.. Thanks

Hi Duncan, I like it just as it is, it seems to have far more character than if the horizontals or verticals were corrected. As a suggestion perhaps just crop the top and right hand side a small amount as that amount of black distracts my eye from the window frame and objects.
Nice Image.
Good luck with the course.

Hi Duncan.

I agree with Tony. I might also lighten the shadows ever so slightly in PS to show a tadge more detail.

The idea is a good one Duncan and you have definitely got the dark aspect going. Not so sure though about the light, other than the light sky in the top part of the picture. As your title is Tea or Tennis it might be appropriate to throw a little more light on the kettle and the shoes which are both very dark.

I have uploaded a mod where I have dodged the midtones on both at about 50% than gone over a second time with the highlights at about 7%. You may get a better result by playing around with the exposures on the raw file and then doiing a bit of dodging.

I am not sure you could get the effect in camera without lighting of some sort. If you have a long enought exposure you could have tried using a torch to play light on these objects.

I think the wonky window looks fine and fits in well with the subject.

Good luck with the course

One of those images you could play around with for hours. A little lighter without losing the contrast might be nice.
