Teesdale barns

By whatriveristhis
" ...the vast Raby Estate which extends over a large area of south Durham. Farmhouses and cottages belonging to this estate can be found throughout the northern side of Teesdale and are easily identified by their attractive whitewashed exteriors.

Whitewashing goes back to the days when a Duke of Cleveland became stranded in a storm while out hunting in Teesdale. He was refused shelter at a local farmhouse which he had mistaken for one of his own properties.

The Duke was determined not to suffer such a humiliation ever again and ordered that from that day on, all buildings belonging to his estate were to be painted white for identification."

Peter, Bill, Moira, and Joline generously gave their awards for my last picture, so my thanks to them and to everyone who voted or commented.

Lovely moody atmosphere and great to have the background information. My uncle used to say of distant sheep, scattered around the hillsides, that they were 'cigarette ends' Smile

The history is new to me - thanks, Alan. The mighty can't bear falling, even if it's into the clarts during a freak shower Wink
Fabulous, threatening sky to complement the lines and composition.

Love the colours and light. I think it might be beside Bowlees.

beautiful mood and great how the heavily frowning skies attenuate the highlights

The whitewashed barns stand out so well against the lowering sky, full of simple drama and detail.

Whitewash has been used for more than walls in this United Kingdom.

A beautiful composition Alan. Little did the Duke of Cleveland think that he would be doing such a favour to today's photographers.

Love the atmosphere created by the stormy sky, the buildings and sheep give just the right amount of highlights. Worth an award.
