Telford's Avon Water Bridge.

By Tooma
Yes, it looks like a tunnel, but it is a bridge, with the tunnel an important part of it. Designed in 1820 by Thomas Telford, it carries what was originally the main road south to Carlisle out of Hamilton, over Avon Water, long before the A74, later again, the M74, was built.

The path through the tunnel runs alongside the river, to my right, and was much used by mill workers, it also linked the Dukes of Hamilton's hunting grounds at the Low Parks with the High Parks upriver. Different types of game in each area; fish, rabbits, and fowl in the Low Parks, and deer, fish, and cattle in the High Parks. A herd of white cattle was famously reared there, and still is today.

V1 is a mono version of my shot.
V2 is a plaque commemorating Telford's design.

I like the tunnel under a bridge-- Clever to extend the bridge for those who travel by the river--plus, your image is a wonderful peek thru image

and some great shadows!

Three interesting shots Tom, and a lovey place to spend some quality time walking. Pam

Well taken and very interesting, Tom.
Telford certainly made his mark on the UK's transport system.

I prefer the lead image as it has a nice range of tones. It looks a tempting tunnel to walk through to see what is on the other side and from your description, more pictures to follow?

A lovely set of images and, like Mac, my preference is for the lead which is very enticing. Exposure is superb! SmileSmileSmile
