Great shot and the negatives have kept well so your chemistry and techniques must have been excellent. I love these historic images. Nowadays, I suspect that the furnace would be fully instrumented, temperatures read from an observation port and lots of safety gear to eliminate a photograph like this. Is that an

It was a clunky old camera, but got me going and I suspect a lot of others too. The Ferrania film was transparency and, if I remember, either 25 or 50ASA - in old money! Very slow but again, a fabulous learning tool. Modern cameras are very VERY easy to use in comparison - I would be on 1600 or 3200 ISO for this!
Out of interest, open hearth steel furnaces were phased out in the UK in the early 70's. A few lingered, like the AJAX oxygen blown open heart developed in Scunthorpe but now all is top blown oxygen converters for bulk steel. 300Tonne per cast. All sampling and temperature taking is automatic - when it works - but the manual equipment is still available.
We used optical pyrometers on coke ovens.

I remember Ferraniacolor slide film, just. I even processed some - along with some Anscochrome, some Russian colour film, and - of course - Ektachrome E-2.
I was very upset when E-4 arrived - a far shorter, hotter process that challenged washing-up bowl temperature control. and it cost around twice as much.
