Out of interest, open hearth steel furnaces were phased out in the UK in the early 70's. A few lingered, like the AJAX oxygen blown open heart developed in Scunthorpe but now all is top blown oxygen converters for bulk steel. 300Tonne per cast. All sampling and temperature taking is automatic - when it works - but the manual equipment is still available.
We used optical pyrometers on coke ovens.

I was very upset when E-4 arrived - a far shorter, hotter process that challenged washing-up bowl temperature control. and it cost around twice as much.
