The Blind Piper & The Man in a Golden Chair

By Philip_H
Abbey churchyard, Culross abbey, Kirk Street, Culross, Fife, Scotland.

Local folklore tells of a ley tunnel running beneath Culross abbey, within which is said to sit a man in a golden chair waiting to give fabulous treasures to anyone who succeeds in finding him. According to one story, a blind piper decided to give it a try and upon entering the tunnel at Newgate with his dog he proceeded to search and could be heard playing his pipes as far as the West Kirk, three quarters of a mile away. Eventually the dog emerged into the daylight, but the piper was never seen, or heard of, again.

The tombstones look as though they are bobbing on a sea of swirling waves. Extraordinary image.

Great image and the story may not be as far fetched as it appears. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century piracy and smuggling were rife all around the British Isles, and particularly in Scotland, where evading payment of duty to the English taxman was seen as fair play. There are stories of numerous tunnels being dug from the beaches along the Southern Fife coast, sometimes for miles inland, for the transportation of goods, particularly wine and brandy. It was commonplace for stories of devilment and such to be invented in an effort to prevent people from investigating too much. As for The Man in the Golden Chair, well, maybe a little too much wine and BrandyTongue
