The Canal Swing-bridge (3) & (4)

By M_squared
When the Duke of Bridgewater built the Bridgewater Canal (1759-1761) it had no locks. It ran on one level from inside his coal mine at Worsley into the centre of Manchester. It crossed the R. Irwell on a masonry aqueduct alongside an ancient stone road-bridge. When the Manchester Ship Canal was constructed (1887-1893) that section of the river was canalised and incorporated into the new waterway. The road-bridge was replaced by a swing-bridge. The aqueduct, despite being much higher than the old road-bridge, was not high enough above the new waterway to facilitate the passage of shipping below. A proposal to raise the Bridgewater Canal with a system of locks was rejected on grounds of water conservation. The decision was taken to build a swing-bridge so that a section of the canal could be isolated and swung clear of Ship Canal traffic. Both swing-bridges would be controlled from a control tower built on a specially constructed island. The two bridges are still functional and are Grade II listed buildings.
