The Cruelty of Time

By chase
Time is sometimes a great healer, other times it is cruel, changing things, sometimes beyond recognition.
The lace & pearl collar were part of my Mothers' Wedding gown, time has done it no favours, it was once white, as were the little lace fingerless gloves.
I found the lovely collar whilst clearing out my parents' home...a sad time.

Taken in daylight, camera left, I have at last found a decent spot with some good light to set up my things.
A 3 frame HDR image, combined in Lightroom, finished in Photoshop.

I am pleased I found the lace, it is now carefully wrapped in special paper to preserve it, together with the wedding album and a few of Mums' pressed bouquet flowers....they are, perhaps for another time.

Thanks for dropping by.
Constructive critique and mods welcome.

I wonder if the third, smallest, timepiece is superfluous? You are in the present, looking at the past. The two clocks would represent the time that is and the time that was. No need for a third timepiece - which some might say represents the future - because you are only focused on the past here.

Things can mellow over time too, that's another way of looking at it. Not just objects but memories.

I hope (and expect) that we will see more of these items. The faded cream is beautiful, much more attractive than white. But like Malc I'd like a simpler composition. The pearl buttons overhanging the clock work for me, I'm not so sure about lace over a lace fan, they are too similar in texture. I think I'd be inclined to leave the buttons in place and hide the rest of the collar behind the clock, to leave the lines of the fan clean and simple.
There's loads of scope in this...

Its nice. I did up[load a mod thats a bit darker overall, not in all places, and I tried to make the watch look older, darker, more sepia. The pearls have a touch of lustre.

I like the arrangement, the lace collar helps to hide the bars projecting from the largest clockface, maintaining the overall softness of the subject; it also adds some depth to the image. ( I find banehawi's mod too harsh). The fairly high key treatment also emphasises the delicacy and lightness of the lace.
Altogether a nice still life.

Thanks all.
3 timepieces...I had a go at representing the past, present and future, the little watch belonged to my Mums Mum ( my Nana ), she actually wore it to the Wedding, so I felt I had to include it, more for myself than the image Blush
I was sad that the lace had yellowed quite so much, I didn't really want it white, would have looked to new but it is what it is.
I do have a couple without the fan though.

Nice mod Willie, thank you.

I like the way the fan's monture (sticks) are spaced like the hands of a clock, and think these are lovely things to find and use for photography.

Lovely set up, super shot... slightly prefer the second one, but if you don't see the alternative then you would still be very happy...

One further thought - Willie's mod distinguishes the structure of the collar better against the fan. I think that's quite important.

I just like it, you held those precious objects with so many memories and then placed them as you wanted them. I suppose that I always look less at the technical aspects and more at what the artist, sculptor or photographer is letting me see and how much they want me to guess. In still life work it is all about what you want us to see. I would guess the light and gentle tones and showing the lace and pearls in their best light is because they matter to you. You haven't bought them as props to arrange, they are your history.

I got the past, present and future timepieces and like how the lines of the fan echo the hands of the clock. It is your own little altar of very personal objects placed how you felt they should be placed. I do hope you use them again, memories and treasures change how they want to be felt and placed.

Take care.
