In November 2013 there was a total eclipse of the sun which began over the Atlantic and progressed across West Africa, into East Africa with the time of the totality getting ever shorter until it petered out over Northern Kenya. In Northern Uganda the eclipse could be seen from the field of the school I used to teach at in the early 70s. A friend of mine is a member of an astronomy group at U.C.L. so we ended up with the group of nearly 30 at the school most making measurements and taking readings. Various global celebrities of the time were just up the road.
The lead photo shows Bob who was so proud to be able to give the students a chance to look through his telescope.
The boys were given a lecture about eclipses in the newly restored main hall. My wife was totally relaxed as you see. Then the eclipse.
The main two photos of the eclipse were not taken by me because they needed equipment and filters I don’t have.
After it was over this school which has been through so much including being taken over by the Lord’s Resistance Army who kidnapped students, forced them to commit horrific crimes, destroyed many of the buildings at the school and lots more, treated their privileged guests to a surprise chicken dinner. Later we had a demonstration of traditional Acholi dancing.
