The Emperor

By Hop-A-Long
Finally got out yesterday and filled my polytunnel with trays fully seeded, a little late but with a touch of heat I should be able to bring the youngsters on fairly quickly.
Apart from taking photographs I find nothing more relaxing than the sound of the rain like we had yeaterday on something like a polytunnel or an old tin roof, not that you find many of them around anymore. Of course it only works if you have a nice cuppa to drink. I was bought one of those thermos style cups for christmas and it keeps my tea hot for ages and I mean hot. A big bonus is that it is the shape of a Nikon lens, brilliant. I just have to remember not to try and fit it to one of my cameras, try explaining that one at the repair shop. "Err, I was fitting a lens and poured the cup of hot tea that was contained in the lens into the camera". I think you may get some odd looks.

Todays upload is a project that I will do again, sadly it didn't work out as planned. This is one of the caterpillars from that project.
He is an Emperor Moth Caterpillar and I raised this from an egg. Unfortunately I had 10 eggs which became 10 caterpillars, this was the last one to survive, it's harder than it looks keeping these alive.
This one eventually became a pupae and I placed him in a cool place as instructed to await his return, of course I assuming he is a he, he could be a she but "it" doesn't quite sound right, so he it is, not that I'm bias or anything.
I checked on him one day and sure enough he had emerged, which I missed, again. Sadly something went wrong and he didn't puff his wings up, they were crumpled and tiny compared to his overall size. I took him into the warm and in the sun to dry him out, but he never flew and eventually passed the following day, so whether he was early emerging I don't know.
Once my darkroom is fully finished I am making an area to keep insects, so I will have another go then.

I hope you like these, any comments as always are welcome.

A well written and informative pre-narrative backed up with two great images, but in my humble opinion, version number uno get my humble vote. A real cracking image, full of natural colours and superb detail, but sadly they are no good for your'e plants.

Regards Nathan.

P.s.

If you managed to grow any Beetroot, could you pass on a couple, we can never seem to grow them in this funny Southern Soil...

Have you actually discussed this with Gill yet? I remember my mother's reaction when I had a similar plan (non-photographically) some sixty years ago... Wink

Such well detailed shots Andy.
And I remember my old darkroom days when I used old teabags to ''tone'' my prints.
All this recycling lark they talk about nowadays,is nothing new to me !!

Superb close-ups.
My seedlings are a bit behind also, and my dahlia tubers seem to have gone on strike. Luckily I have grown some dahlias from seed but I never plant them out until the beginning of June.
