The Enlarger

By chase
Photographed very differently to my first offering of this Gnome Enlarger.
I have included more 'stuff' and used HDR this time....no Lensbabies were interfered with during the making of this image Wink
The red of the Safelight is much more intense, lighting up much more in the frame.

My next ermmmm ....'experiment' will be to take the enlarger apart, it has a couple of fabulous, thick pieces of magnifying glass inside I could use for different stuff. Maybe it will work and maybe not but there is no harm in giving it a go and it will be dead easy to put it back together Wink

3 frames, each 1 stop apart, combined in Lightroom, finished in Photoshop with a bit of faffing.
Nothing added or taken away, although I was tempted to drop on a Moth or two Wink

Thanks for your patience with these images, now to choose one for a print to give the original donor Lady, the equipment belonged to her Husband sadly no longer with us Sad

Constructive critique and mods welcome.
Stay safe, take care and smile.

I do like the glow of this one Janet, makes me feel as though I am standing in the room and the eye is immediately taken to the paraphernalia on the table. Very true to life in the darkroom👍👍!!

Very brave of you to consider dismantling the enlarger and all power to your elbow.
That safelight will feature a lot, I think in many setups!

Thanks everyone.
Kate, it looks easy to dismantle to a point, the glass is easy to get to, I just need to lift the top off, that's the bit I want.

David, wonderful to have your UA, many thanks.

Another memorable darkroom still-life, super lighting. That Gnome enlarger has a much more satisfying shape than my old 'square' Durst

Those two lumps of glass are called 'condensers' Janet...

It's a condenser enlarger, giving greater contrast than the alternative, a diffuser enlarger, but more prone to showing up dust and negative imperfections.

The column sticking out of the top has a little thumbscrew to allow the user to move the light bulb inside the enlarger head up and down - the ideal, according to my Ilford Manual of Photography, is that the condensers focus the light from the bulb to form an image of it in the lens, passing through the negative on the way. It's altogether less trouble to use a diffuser enlarger, which just has a white screen above the negative.

I thought you'd like to know...
