The Erzberg

By bliba
The Erzberg is the biggest and most modern mining area in Central Europe, the most important ore deposit in the Alps, symbol of Austrian industrialization, and the center of the famous “Eisenstraße” (= iron road). For more than 1.300 years people have been mining the precious mineral on this mountain called “Erzberg” (= ore mountain). In 1890 open-pit mining changed and mining was done in benches. This is the reason why the mountain looks like a pyramid these days. More than 12 million tons of stone are mined per year. Not by using tools, of course, but by daily blasts.

A LEGEND OF THE FINDING OF THE ERZBERG

Without the Erzberg the city I grew up in(Linz) would not be the city it is now .3 million tons of fine ore can be processed to high quality steel in Linz and Donawitz.
We owe our prosperity to Erzberg and of the “Wassermann” WinkWinkWink

What an extraordinary image of a fascinating place. The tiny diggers (which are probably huge, close up) give a sense of scale. Interesting caption, too.

Earthmoving on a grand scale ... one wonders if it could be seen from space ! The tiny...yet massive trucks are fascinating against the layered ledges . Great shot Oliver and backstory

Your text told me so much about this mining area--- but initially I saw the image as something quite beautiful-- It tells an amazing story!

Quite an amazing place with a very good explanation of its purpose. It must have very good quarrymen who could produce those so symmetrical layers of rock, especially when you consider the amount of years it has been working. Your image shows it too great advantage, with the mist giving a touch of mystery!

Your informative notes have encouraged me to find out more about the workings and history of the site, which, I have to admit, I had never heard of before today...

Burrowing to the centre of the earth, you have to wonder what will happen if they get there?

Marvellous spiral and soft colours Oliver.

Makes a great abstract/pattern pic, Oliver. Hard to imagine the size and scale of this without those tiny vehicles in there 👍

marbled earth... well captured.
the scale of this Erzberg is of a different matter altogether. Look at these big dumpster trucks.... they are tiny in comparison.
