The ghost of the allotment gardens

By mrswoolybill
I love scarecrows, though I seem to find them a lot scarier than the crows do.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

It is the sign that caught my eye.

When my father used to smoke a pipe it was Swan Vesta's that he used.
One day he was lighting his pipe in a shop but there was no bin to put the match it so he put the spent match back in the box - as he often did - and put the box in his pocket.
Unfortunately the match wasn't cold and he had put it back in the box facing the wrong way.
Luckily he wasn't badly burnt when the whole box went up but it cost his a new pair of trousers and a jacket.

The delights that young people miss out on, Roy! Wink
These allotments are part of the colliery village at Beamish, recreating life as at the start of the Great War in 1914.
Good morning folks and thank you!

Very nice, Moira.
Many years ago, I had an allotment and as a measure to stop birds causing havoc I constructed what I considered to be a really scary scarecrow.
I returned a few days later to find a seagull perched on top of the scarecrow and droppings were running all down the front of it.Smile

Thought, just for a very brief moment, that it was playing a violin.

Now that really would scare the birds away...and possibly other allotment users too!

And you've given me an idea of one more place to explore within a mile of the house.
Never though of a wander around the allotments.

Swan Vestas were very prone to self igniting... happened to a friend of mine at Primary school...in the days when carrying matches was seen as very bold!! 🤣🤣

Indeed crows seem to like them and often perch on them.

Is the swan there to scare the crows in the event of the purpose-made scarer not working?

Yep, very good subject matter, Moira.
If it were me, I would've squared the image from the top, cropping just above the S and losing the roofing.
The shed takes my eye more than the scarecrow does, probably why the crows don't notice it. Wink

Love the whole composition and brought back so many memories, my Dad had an allotment and they weren't as well ordered as they are today! Lovely Moira.

Nice historic scene, Moira. But the dark processing does contribute to the "grim up north" myth held by us southerners Wink.

Allotments are good! Have a look at clevercloggs's recent uploads for inspiration.

I can see what you mean John, I may go back and try a different crop from scratch.

That really is the intention, we like to keep the place to ourselves. Wink And this is supposed to be 1914...
Thanks everyone.

Cracking minimalist scarecrow Moira.
I like your processing here, it gives a nostalgic look to this.
I'm with the square crop idea, losing that bit of roofing.

It would be especially scary if it was night-time! 👻😲 I remember when I were a lad we always had Swan Vestas around, more so for lighting the cooker rings rather than dad lighting his cigs, he always used a petrol lighter! A timeless image, Moira 😃👍

Thank folks, and thanks Tony for the UA.
Going back over comments - this is actually square, which was what I wanted. I wanted square and I wanted the Swan Vestas sign complete, and that more or less dictated the rest of the frame, although I was keen to include the roof line top right.
But I shall go back and try other possibilities. Goodness knows I have enough time...

Your scarecrow looks an old single masted sailing ship, with a crow's nest on top? The old-fashioned metallic signs were great for waterproofing sheds etc.
