The Gig.

By Tooma
Jazz guitarist Chris Standring & co at Newcastle in January '17. One of my all-time favourite composer players. Love his unique and distinctive style. He is an English lad who headed to Los Angeles some years ago, and has built up a large and loyal fan base, returning to the UK most years for a few gigs, mostly in the south of England. Never seen him make it up to Scotland yet, and Newcastle was close enough. I was in a poor seat for taking pictures.

I've put a video below for those of you interested to hear him play. I did put a recording from this gig on YT, but the sound is a bit distorted, so the video below shows him at the London gig prior to the one in Newcastle.

A great atmospheric image from the concert, and pretty good considering the exposure and aperture used.

Pleased you enjoyed his music, Colin. It's always something to put a smile on your face when you find a player new to you who makes music which satisfies. Let me invite you to hear some other great musos. Acoustic Alchemy. I would love to get to one of their concerts.

Live music is something I'd like to photograph more
Do you have any issues taking a camera in?

@nellacphoto - Some venues don't allow photography, Colin, usually large concerts, but I've sneaked some shots in, and others have no issue with it. The Jazz at The Globe in Newcastle above, had no problem with it.

Yes I took a bag full of gear and photographed the Clark Tracey Quintet at the London jazz festival last year.
Lunchtime concert. Full house of 200 people.
All very relaxed
I wouldn't chance it at the O2 though!

Clark is the son of Stan Tracey. Used to drum for his dad when he was young. Now tends to employ and mentor young jazz musicians. I sent him the photos after the gig and got a very complimentary thank you email back from him.

Hi Tom
Just by way of update I'm hooked on Chris Standring's music right now
Lots of great YouTube videos
I also realised the drummer in your Live in London video is Jack Pollitt who I videoed in a basement venue in Hornsey, London when he was drumming with my daughter's music teacher Niamh McNally and her soul band.
Good drummer with an unusual style.
All the best
Colin

@nellacphoto/Colin. More neat connections, Colin. Just posted one of Chris's vids to Twitter - after listening to it again myself, of course - the delightful, "Is There A Doctor In The House". I'm happy you too are now enjoying his music. He is an amazing talent with a unique style, and always a great groove going on.
Cheers,
Tom. 😎

Thanks Tom
Let's hope it's not too long before Chris can perform again and I can hopefully get to see him ...
... maybe even with a camera Smile

@nellacphoto/Colin - He has been doing some live performances using backing tracks on Facebook, Colin. I don't use it, but I was still able to watch. If you subscribe to his Newsletter from his website you will get all the info, including gigs and projects he is working on. The last "concert" was just a couple of nights ago, so it may still be up on Fb.
