Getting The Bird: How To Photograph Birds With Long Telephoto Lenses

The Gig 1

By mrswoolybill
This is James, the bass player in the same band as Bill. They played at a charity ceilidh a week or so ago. Usually I don’t bother to take the camera to such events because I reckon on spending my time dancing. But this time I was supposed to be taking a group shot, to be used to create an updated band logo - more on that topic in the near future.
So I enjoyed myself, and took some 150 pictures in the evening, before the battery died on me. It’s taken me a week to sort through them!
I’m starting off with a ‘pick ‘n’ mix’ selection to give an impression of the atmosphere. As you will see, this is not a traditional Jimmy Shand style band...
All were taken using the little built-in flash on the D40 - Bill took his flash gun along but I found it unwieldy.
Over the next few days you’ll get to see a lot more of these guys. Incidentally James has been in the band since the days when his guitar was actually bigger than him. And sorry girls, he’s spoken for.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Hope you got some dancing in later in the evening.

I like taking my camera to these events. It saves me having to dance with the Missus!!! Good exposures here Moira.I always find the lighting a bit ''tricky'' at these functions. The flash seems to have coped well.Would you believe I have never used mines yet.A good set here and I will investigate the effects of soiled towels on the life span of wire mesh baskets in relationship to the ageing and rusting effect of said basket.Or perhaps I will take up a new hobby!!!!!!

Thank you everyone! Ladies, I'm afraid I mainly ignored James after these, he was posing like mad and I refuse to pander to the male ego! But I have loads more of Robert the melodion player.
Mick - The stage lighting was tricky, there's an awful lot of pink in some of these, but to me that's part of the atmosphere.
It's the first real use I've made of the flash and I was very impressed, these came out a lot better than I expected.
Anyway, you're going to be seeing these for the next week or more...

he really looks like a star, his pose and expression comes across as a fun guy and very proffesional, the gent in glasses doesn't seem to happy at that point of the proceeding judging by his expression....lol sorry

N°1 is definitely the most interesting for me. I like the triangle that the faces form. I was actually expecting 2-5 to be crops or versions on N°1.
I look forward to seeing what else you'll upload from this night out. It certainly looks like fun.

This first shot of James is a really good one and the pick of the bunch imo. To comment on some of the comments above, I personally like subjects who pose when you point a camera at them; it's the ones who stiffen up that are hard to photograph. Fossiler's comment about 'the gent in the glasses' not being happy raised a smile if not a 'lol' from me! John
