The Gondoliere

By Lucy_Locket
Spotted this gondoliere waxing lyrical whilst sitting on a wall at the Rialto Market, Venice. Managed to capture a couple of typical Italian hand gestures. You gotta love the expressive way they punctuate their speech...

Thanks for looking, and for all the comments on previous posts. Its nice to be back!!

Apparently there is only one. And she is the first one ever! According to a gondoliere we got chatting to they have to do a test which is equivalent to a London cabbie's 'knowledge'. Hardly surprising given the amount of canals. Did see a couple of water traffic jams as well! (may post one soon).

Excellent use of shallow dof, really well judged to retain background detail while keeping it unobtrusive. I'm glad to have your written explanation, mind you, as I first thought he was standing on his gondola punting without a pole Smile

Just one Cornetto...
This is a terrific candid portrait, it's dynamic and full of character. I heard the term 'environmental portraiture' a while ago, it certainly fits here.
