The Hat

By Richsr
Many thanks for all your comments on my last upload, very much appreciated.

First of a series of images from a recent shoot, I want to create some strong white and black shapes just using the hat and models face profile.

Would be interested in your comments

Thanks for looking.

Regards Richard

Much better than my effort I posted last week! My only comment (which of course is down the personal choice) is that only a small area of the hat is sharp? I think I would have prefered the whole hat or the model's face to be sharper?

Discuss . . . . . . . .

Thanks for your comment Nick I agree, but my artistic choice for this one was a soft image, I wanted the enphesis on the soft curves and contrast between the black and white.

Ok I'm going to go against the grain - hopefully this will be perceived as constructive as intended!!! The composition is sublime, the lighting perfect, but for me this image doesn't quite work (sorry Richard, but I know you value critique).

I realise sharpness is not an essential quality to all images, but in this case I think your models profile needed to be absolutely tack sharp. On my monitor, the dof seems to have run short of achieving this. Without the sharpness (in such a minimalist composition as this) the focal point becomes imprecisely defined and somewhat indistinct.

Right, I'll go and grab my coat before the deluge of folk telling me to shut up.

The stated objective: A models profile, and a hat. Objective achieved 100%. Ive come across this in the critique approval area, and though the comments re sharpness can also work, a case could also be made for less detail in the face, as all you needed was a profile. Like a mannequin, anonymous, a prop.

Well done Rich,I think you achieved the look you wanted, each to their own on the sharpness etc & I think this could work both ways so,no right or wrong, just a difference of opinion & a different need to see different things.
I quite like this as is personally, love the curve of the hat.
I can see where others are coming from though...Willie has nailed it above.

I could only hope for as much feedback on one of my images, the composition is out of this world, but for me personally the lack of a sharp edge leaves me wanting something, it's almost like the softness is not soft enough which leaves me wanting sharpness Smile

Hi Richard ,
I think Ilarggub (What kind of names that Wink) has hit the nail on the head. The composition is magical but sharpness is missing from the edges.
As a iconic image it stands up and deserves the merit but as a portrait Sad

Now i`m going to have to have a go.
Thanks for posting
