The holding bay for husbands 2

By mrswoolybill
I observed these sad souls, abandoned outside the John Lewis perfumery department, for quite a while. They were lost in their own private limbo. But then a blond walked past and one of them suddenly woke up...
I told the story a few weeks ago: In 2008 Eldon Square shopping mall announced a grand photography competition, to showcase the glamorous, exciting experience of shopping there. But the results never appeared, and neither did the promised exhibition. I suspect that a lot of other people were doing what I was doing, photographing a very different view.
Original file taken in May 2008, first processed December 2020. Is this a record?
Thanks for looking,
Moira

Even though we can't see his face, it's obvious he's wearing a sadly wistful expression...

Been there many a time myself, a very well observed and taken image of everyday life, an image most of us would walk by.
I love these fascinating slices of human life.

I think that is a feeling most men know. The good thing is it's a moment just to relax and watch the world go by...

Great shot and the sad thing is that most shopping centres will not allow photography.

Thanks again. The difference with the previous upload is subtle but telling, I think - I reckoned that they deserved to be uploaded separately.
Robert, photography was only allowed for the weekend of the competition. I made the most of it... Wink

An excellent slice of everyday life for doting husbands, or a restful place, away from "should I buy it, dear"
Great conversion from colour with nice range of mono tones.

It's strange is this, toggling between this and husbands (1), everyone in the background has moved, yet that chap in the foreground looks like he hasn't moved a muscle! 😁👍

Precisely. Looking back at the original sequence, I took around eight frames over a couple of minutes or so, and he didn't move once.

Practised and perfected resignation. However torturous it is, it is far better than sending the wife out alone with the credit card...

I know it is one of your favorite images, but I must say why you are so happy to see those helpless expressions, are you advocating feminism...

I wonder if they will be sitting on their own settee's right now....while the wife is shopping online.
....and the wife will be planning the return to store when the lockdown lifts before she has even paid.
This is the death of the high street and they do not realise what is about to happen.

This is one of a series, about the reality of shopping in a particularly soulless, uninspiring location, that the owners consider to be wonderful. It's about the big divide between fantasy and reality in retailing. I'm not sure how it could be interpreted as a feminist image, although I have no problem with that.
Thanks everyone.

Truth is hard to take. Many shoppers feel uninspired too. Online is a factor but if online stopped I don't see a rush back to shopping centres.

At least if those guys were at home they could watch some sport. Ah, Six Nations starts soon Smile
