I like this very much indeed. Monochrome suits the subject perfectly; the texture of the paper and metal are just right and the gleam of the flute is nicely controlled. The idea of the instrument placed amid a selection of sheet music most of which is out of focus is visually and emotionally appealing. A very good subject for inspiration indeed!
I don't know exactly what A/AS Level examiners are looking for these days; all exams tend to be either a bit behind the times or else excessively trendy. But I have a gut feeling that they would expect the focus to be a little bit forward, i.e. on the embouchure of the flute rather than on Bar 13 of the music! You might find that focusing manually on the embouchure would retain acceptable focus on the stave even at f4. If you are using this image as inspiration you are presumably seeking to re-shoot, so you might wish to try a few different combinations of focal length and aperture before making a final decision.
Speaking personally I rather like the image as it is; but I'm not an A Level examiner!
