The Lantern Kaleidoscope.

By DeSilver
A couple of weeks ago I had the good fortune to travel down to Ely Cathedral with DaveU & RogBrown. Ely is quite a nice place but we all found that the Cathedral was quite boring to put it mildly especially as it costs 6 to get in + a further 2 to take pictures. I do not mind the 2 to take pictures but 6 to get into a place of worship is a bit much.
Pictures were very few and far between for all three of us but I did manage to get this one of what I believe is called "The Lantern" and is at the top of the central tower. It reminds me of a child's Kaleidoscope.

Thanks for stopping by and having a look not at only this image but at all my previous images. Smile

It does remind me too of a kaleidoscope. Can you even imagine building something like this. Seems impossible doesn't it. Beautiful............Sandy

Visited Ely several years ago whilst on Spring break holiday, but never got into the cathedral, so only photographed it from outside! I agree about having to pay to go into these places - like York Minster, so not been inside for years - I don't mind making a voluntary donation. Anyway, a splendid shot here, David, not easy to get, especially leaning over backwards with the camera pointing upwards, and trying not to get it wonky! Even straightening things up in PS can be tricky...Wink

In my homeland in Iran we have beautiful mosques with amazing ceilings too. I weep for missing my country looking at your lovely photograph.

A nice strong composition with good detail. I also have a photo of The Lantern but it's not as good as yours.

Having read your text, I'm horrified by the charges, so a vote to help alleviate the cost!! Smile You've got a very symmetrical capture here - nicely done!

Ely cathedral 'boring' !?
I couldn't disagree more ..
but a very beautiful capture anyway.
It is sad that we do need to pay such fees for their upkeep.

Lovely capture from a most interesting and beautiful cathedral to my mind.

Made a special detour earlier in the year to re-visit it and wasn't disappointed. The Lady Chapel in particular is a glory.

Yeah, it does. I never thought of it. Excellently taken image, not easy.. I agree with you the fee.. England is the most expensive place to visit. Even Scotland's National trust pass was(is?) cheaper than English one.

Many years since I have been there, but I love that lantern. Fabulous shot. Agree about the paying to get in, donation is far better.
