The Mourning Dove
Zenaida macroura. 12 inches---male and female similar
Mourning Doves are called such due to their mournful cooing. They mate for life and care for their broods together. As ground feeders, they will clean up under a feeder or indulge on scattered seeds. Here---a lone dove, but one can be sure her mate is near by watching (guarding!).
