The Oak King

By AngieLatham
The Oak King rules the waxing half of the seasonal year, the fertile summer months of growth and greenery.Every Summer Solstice he battles with the Holly King ,who wins ,and rules over the dark, cold months of winter....only to be beaten once again by the Oak King at Winter Solstice......so goes the eternal cycle of birth, death and rebirth in nature.

Special thanks to Fraser , a real man of the woods, who kindly posed for me at the EPZ meet in Rowardennan last week. The celtic wooden carvings used in the image are his own handy work and he also built the stone throne he is sitting on Smile

I have included the original photograph in the mod section. All other photographs used are also mine, approx 24 layers in all Smile
I wasen't going to attempt this manip for a while....but then channel 4 showed Lord of the Rings tonight...:-p

Angie I've so been looking forward to this. And here it is! 24 layers! and worth every layer.

You've done the concept really proud I think, and the detail is just extraordinary. So many layers in this (and I don't mean layer layers, I mean layers! LOL) and a wonderful journey round the image for the eyes. I really like how you've used the carving as a background layer too - everything feels so organic and rich. (Love that font in front of him - lovely and mossy!)

Great work Angie - glad to have seen this :-]

Thankyou so much everyone. I was a little nervous about coming back on the PC in the light of day and seeing what it was I posted at gone 2am this morning!I have a bad habit of uploading images as soon as I have finished them rather than sleeping on them! :-$
Luckily I'm still as pleased with it as I was back then. There are a few small things to clean up....like I diden't notice the green orb in the middle of Frazer's crotch area!? The hair on the left needs a bit of cleaning up too as it looks a bit cloned.
I hope Frazer likes it Dave ,it's always a little daunting doing a manip of somone for whom it hasto be done right to do them justice.let me know what he thinks....i hope he dosen't get blown off the top of any hills,it's very windy here!

I'm off to do some commission work and will pop in again later. Hope your all having a good Monday morning! Smile x

OMG! 24 layers?

Well I must say that your efforts really pay off. I had a look at the original. And you started out with a great pose and model and that really helps.

The funny thing about your description about how they battle, is that it really happens that way on a global scale. If you watch a satellite movie that spans an entire year, you will see these forces in action. Inevitably one wins, but there are many dramatic battles in between. Interesting how old wisdom can still be so modern.

Thankyou so much Patrick Smile I hope you enjoy the Holly King which I have just uploaded as much. Yes, agree with the myths and how they are full of ancient wisdom....you just haveto look beneath the surface.

Angie,

This work is first class, I am a decent artist on paper but useless on the computer at generating anything that would come near this.

Your creativity using layers and blending ( I think) is a real talent.

Thankyou Chris! Smile I am the other way around...I never could paint or draw on paper what was in my head and only the age of digital software has given me the tools to create what I wish.Thankyou for your great compliment Smile

Thankyou Jeanie, your so lucky to have a pole done for you! I'd love one in my garden.....and a throne! :-P
