The old boiler

By mrswoolybill
Time for a bit of colour, I think. This is a cross section of an Ellerman Lines locomotive boiler, at the National Railway Museum, York. It was built in 1949, the same year as I was. We old boilers have to stick together...
Thanks for looking,
Moira

I may have cropped it differently but as it stands this is a unique well composed abstract and I do like the complementary colours. I very much doubt that this would work particularly well in mono.

Albert, I worked quite hard on the crop - because of the arrangement of the pipes there will always be cut-off arcs. I tried square but the proportions here worked better for me. To my eye it should in principle work in b&w but I didn't actually like it as much as colour.

Composition is excellent imho. If I had a criticism I think the colours just lack a bit of punch (what are the levels like?). Minor point though. I could see this printed as an acrylic.

Edit: ought to add my laptop hasn't got a calibrated screen so I could be getting a distorted view in regard to the colour

Beautiful. Never let anyone mess with your crop- I don't Smile .......which, incidentally, is perfect.

From memory, this is pretty close to the truth. I'm more satisfied with the blue than the yellow. Again from memory, I fiddled with brightness and contrast, made a Levels adjustment. That adds a bit of punch, but I tend not to fiddle with colour a lot. I guess I'm more interested in lines, textures, light. Hope that makes sense, I should pay more attention to these things. I took this with b&w in mind, but it didn't work out like that.
Cheers folks, and regards to old boilers everywhere.

Since when have photographers been concerned with the truth? Wink

All is interpretation.

Now this is interesting, because I do care passionately about recording the truth as I see and feel it. That may not be literal, of course. Light is the essential truth, colour is skin deep. So that's my interpretation.

They should never be concerned with anything else. But this is a semantic difficulty, because that isn't what you meant. You meant the facts.

Fabulous image and the longest chain of comments I have ever seen. See what a blast of colour can do! I think Rende is going to like this too. I'd have put money on this being one of his big, bold photographs Smile
