THE Pebble

By Pete
Well it's a bit more than a pebble but I've already shot THE Rock.

This is a large round rock on the beach at Elgol that I first saw when Paul (sut68) posted it in 2010 and made reference to some ice cream man who is supposed to have bagged it first.

I turned up one evening and a photographer had already claimed the zone (we joked about ticket systems!) so I had to come back the day after.

I love the rock and the shapes around so decided to follow the tripod holes here too. And, as if by magic, the surrounding platforms (sloping rocks) do appear to have tripod holes. Good job because to get to certain angles (not this one) you do have to do some jiggery pokery with the tripod legs. I was thankful to the versatile Manfrotto Neotec.

I took the Strobeam flash with the plan to illuminate the rock and surrounds while exposing for the background but the flash wasn't strong enough to do what I wanted. I also used the Lee 0.9 ND grad but that wasn't strong enough to cope with the contrast range. So HDR or some more jiggery pokery? I chose the latter and used the Lee Filters grad case to act as a mask . Exposed for the foreground and wafted the filter case over the top half to dumb down the sky.

I ended up with a RAW file that can be processed very differently and settled on this warm version.

I have to say that I prefer the cool original. Good use of the improvised Lee grad. Wink

They're both excellent images but I think I prefer v1's warmer tones and brighter/slightly more contrasty feel. The waving of the filter case over the top half sounds like a variation on the magic cloth technique (something I've read about but never tried!) and certainly worked well in this case.

I like version 1 - the detail is excellent but a little warmer than version 2. But both excellent photos with lovely composition. Well done.

LOL, thanks for the namecheck Pete though I'm sure it's appeared on here a 'few' times before I got to it Wink

Looks like you got right down in there though and this feels much more of a 'claustrophobic' composition than any I've bagged from here. Frames the boulder/shot nicely and provides a lovely narrow exit through to the Cuillins!!!

LOL @ Ice Cream Man indeed GrinWink

At least you had the tide in which helps when shooting this pebble, very nicely done this Peter.

Just catching up with these Highland shots Pete and this is a cracker. Your technique (a variation on the 'magic cloth'?) worked very well. Great mood and I really like the way that the viewers attention is immediately drawn to the central rock.

Both versions do well Pete. Find myself drawn more to the natural colours in V2 though. Paul

Some shots need no introduction as we follow the path of those gone before us ...... Very dramatic.
