The perpetual student

By mrswoolybill
This character sits looking out of a projecting upper floor corner window at Gateshead College. I've had my photographic eye on him for years. Finally last month I wandered in to Reception and said 'This is going to sound like an odd request, but...'
He doesn't seem to have a name, nobody knows anything about him. He just arrived with the College building, and stayed.
What I didn't realise, looking up from the road, is that there's a glass panel on either side. So it's difficult to get a good view and avoid too many reflections.
The version is for explanation.
Thanks for looking,
Moira

So he is imprisoned in a glass box?
That might explain the handcuff marks on his wrists.

Both excellent, but I find the Version particularly striking... he seems overwhelmed with despair at the prospect of having to repeat a whole year in order to re-sit.

I find the use of the actual cane quite interesting, Moira. Well chosen POVs and impressive results.

I am always glad to find that there are people here who see the world through the same warped lens as I do. Grin

Thanks, and better than you realise! The sculpture is in bright orange fibre glass...

Initially, I wrote the behaviour of perpetual students off as simple laziness, based on the notion that these young adults are content to live off their parents, spending their days on campus and their nights in clubs or bars. After all, life is far more pleasurable when you don’t have bills to pay, or angry clients to answer to.
However, a recent conversation I had with an older friend, himself a teacher, opened my mind to a different possibility. This friend suggested that people who choose to remain students do so not out of laziness or apathy, but of an unconscious fear that they will be unable to cope with “the real world”.

P.S. excellent and weird, great photographic job

This is superb and I can't decide which I like best. In Jersey there are a lot of statues in weird places. Well spotted Moira.

The version is quite spooky, the lead has s feel of trying to escape the constant learning cycle!! If only our brains were backed up in the cloud somewhere??

Btw. Where is the Cloud? 😁😁😁

He has the look of pure despair.....I guess if I were orange I would be depressed too!
So glad you did this in mono.

An excellent image Moira. What I find most interesting is that nobody knows anything about him.

A curious one. Did he have a walking stick when first placed in the window? It looks so right.
Someone must have made him, but why orange?
So I think mono was an excellent choice, making him look like a stone sculpture.

My thanks to Leo, Sue, Ken and Guy for their UAs today. Some interesting interpretations... I suspect that the walking stick is original, from the way the hands rest on it.
The version really is just for reference, reflections were tricky and it's cropped down from a much bigger frame as I didn't have my long lens with me.

A perpetual student of philosophy I suspect, contemplating the reality
of his walking stick. Is it supporting him or is he supporting it ?
That and the meaning of life should keep him in situ for a while longer SmileSmile
Nice work moira.
