The Pinnacle

By dpenman
I captured this on my last trip to Death Valley National Park. I was looking for side lighting to give detail to the sand and the dunes, so I was up before sunrise and found this little gem.

For me there is no sense of scale to the Sand Dunes, and the composition is not to strong neither, which is a shame because it sounds a great location.

Mike has hit the proverbial nail on the head here, the lack of scale means this could be anything from what it is to a pile of salt on a table. A camel or a figure would do very nicely here to provide that information together with some detail in the sky like maybe just darker and a little more of it.

EXIF is good for what you were attempting it just needs something to provide scale.

Shapes and curves, light and shadow I like, but I wonder why not colour?

You are passing comment on your own image, little gem. Afraid not for me. I would have stayed with colour and gone for some contrast and a deep blue sky. This is a very subjective image, and one man's gem is not necessarily anothers.

Hi Dustin, I like this image but for me the B+W is lacking contrast. In colour it would be a wonderful combination of sand yellow tones complimented by the blue sky colouring. Here for me its all about the shape and the contrast. I have loaded a mod to demonstrate what I mean, I realise it may not be what your looking for but I hope it shows my thoughts and intentions.
I have increased the contrast and brightness through the levels layer, this brings more definition to the shape of the dune itself, I then used the dodge and burn tools to bring some extra emphasis to the sand itself.

I dont believe the sand is actually yellow in this location, more white - buts its a while since Ive been there. Definitely no camels!
