This is very much what I had in mind when commenting on the previous shot. It has more space under the cactus, placement is nicely off-center, and it has the horizontal to balance the vertical.
I think I might try a square crop for simplicity, it combines the virtues of portrait and landscape. And a bit more contrast, for the sense of early morning sun.

I found this on the internet: "I remember reading in a book that this is a fairly common for these plants to die. They start leaking the dark fluid and once they start doing this the plant is as good as dead".
I much prefer this composition. As Moira said, a vertical format isn't always ideal for a vertical subject. Here you have the environment and some other saguaros for balance.

I'm flummoxed by hte error message...
A thought - you used auto white balance, and that often (usually, maybe) gives a perverse result. How were the colours as you remember them? It's worth playing with the WB in editing to get precisely hte effect you want.
I may try a mod to give the feel that I imagine is right for the desert. But I don't know: wasn't there, have minimal experience of desert conditions...

There's some breakup in the sky as I pushed the adjustments a long way - the original sky is very pale and i wanted to give some idea of what adeep blue sky can turn out like in mono.
I guess from what you say that this is local and eay to get to so when the sky and lighting conditions are 'perfect' you can nip out and get some super looking shots 9colouir and mono).
