The Proggy Mat Maker

The gentleman in the image is making a proggy mat. The base for the mat was an onion sack. The pattern and colour in the mat was made from any old fabric forced into the onion sack with an old peg.

The mat would be laid in the parents bed, until another mat was created. The mat on the bed would become a floor mat
until when it was old and worn and then it would have been thrown on the compost heap.

Recycling in the early 1900s.

Why "Proggy" though?

A fine period portrait capture, Gavin 👍 I've never heard the term 'proggy' mat, but it looks a bit like what grandad used to make, flock rugs they were called. Old clothes were cut up into narrow strips, about ½ to ¾ inch wide and about 3 to 4 inches long. The strip was pushed through the canvas with a small pointed tool, the other end of it pushed through the back 😀
