The Purple Man of York

By charisma515
The Purple Paint man is outside Betty's Teashop in a very busy part of York. He makes a good subject as paints the hair of the Chinese vsiitor

Hi,

I can see this working without the sign of the Tea room or the beautiful teapot, not because the contrast is not striking or beautiful but because it is overpowering and distracts from the amusing scene below.

I know him well, and try to avoid him... Wink This is very well focused and timed, and you needed to snap quickly or lose the moment. I thoroughly approve of the use of shutter speed priority here, light can vary quite dramatically between the tall buildings and you needed to be sure of the fast shutter speed, plus the large aperture to isolate the subject.

You wanted to give a sense of the location, in a narrow, characterful street. And of course Betty's is a York institution. But this is about the performer not the tea shop. To my mind it needed to be angled down a bit - more of his 'flying' coat and his bicycle, less of the shop signage. So far as the background is concerned, the tea shop window gives all the atmosphere that is needed and at F4.5 it is very nicely blurred. You could easily lose the top quarter of the frame.

This is cropped down from a larger file, could you upload the original please?

The mod work better for me Fred, - I like the strong, deep colours.

For me, the composition is very wrong. The whole image is in the left half of the frame and even then needs a top crop the remove detail to just above his head.

The street equivalent of an objet trouvee... Well seen, rapidly reacted!

Nothing to add to what Moira has said about composition. But you can't have everything on the street...

Even if it IS the wrong image, Fred, I think you did well to capture this particular amusing moment, and your shutter speed has frozen the action really nicely. The purple paint man is a real character.
Seeing your original, I can understand your difficulties, but you did well. Obviously, it's best not to have to crop this much because image quality is compromised.

Pamela.
