The Royal Oak

By DiegoDesigns
Winsford in Somerset, has a long and interesting history. The Domesday Book records that a total of 41 villagers, 34 small holders and would you believe - 9 slaves - lived there. During the 17th Century the gentleman Highwayman "Tom Faggus" was reputed to have held up travellers near the 12th Century Royal Oak Inn. It's other claim to fame, is that Ernest Bevin, the trades union leader, wartime Minister of Labour, and later Foreign Secretary, was born in the village on 7 March 1881. Even on this damp and decidedly miserable day, there was still a charm about the place, I thought worthy of capturing.

Here's wishing everyone a Happy New Year and thanks for stopping and having a look...

Superb image, great composition tone etc, what makes it even better is the overall gloom of the weather AND no horrid motor vehicles in sight, I would have been tempted to clone out the signs on the pub, And then you could imagine this was taken a very long time ago ( perhaps even try a B/W version, just to see ).

BUT great as it is no question.

I've had the pleasure of the odd pint in this pub over the years and I have never seen it in daylight!
Very nice photo inspite (or because) of the weather.

Quite beautiful Dave. Looks just like a painting, and the reflections and general composition make this work so well for me.

I'd perhaps like to see one or two figures just to add a little extra interest ... and don't dare say you've already cloned them out Smile

Pleased to give you the RC for this gorgeous image. The reflections on the wet road really make it a bit special, and the effect you've created is almost painterly.

Many thanks for all the additional comments. It is an HDR image, processed with the help of Photomatix Pro, which I discovered before Christmas. Loads of experiments since then and I think I've found the process now and maybe the right subject with this one. Thanks again everyone.

P.S DaveU - It took ages to clone out the five people stood outside the pub! %-)>

Really subperb work Dave, for me your best to date - I have to learn how to do this!!
Excellent shot anyway, but the effect works a treat, I especially like the sheen of the wet road and the reflection of the building, most worthy of all the clicks and comments and again - interesting description! Best Wishes for 2007.

Hi Dave and happy new year to you. You're correct about that certain charm. Indeed I think the damp conditions make the shot as they allow for the reflection.
