Chris, you're certainly dedicated and went to the trouble of getting the feather! I do think this is closer to authenticity, the small circle of dim light given by (or apparently so) the candle, and I like the fact it's all within the frame now. Jools' point in the last pic. about the writing is a good one - a little bit too neat and structured - you could imagine a tortured genius staying up all night by candllelight scribbling away and making corrections as he/she went..but it's hard to say whether that would actually detract from the image.

Like this version a lot more. As Stephen says, it does have the look of authenticity about it. Plus, changing the lighting has given it more atmosphere. I can't think of anything more you could do to improve it!
Depending on your audience, and on how much of a perfectionist you (or they) are, you could research facsimiles of old musical manuscripts but that would probably be taking things a little far.
One thing that has just occurred to me, you could try making the paper look a little less perfect - strategic stains, ink blobs, etc. Just a thought.
