The Score (Movement Pt II)

By chrisw
This is a re-shoot of my previous image. Things that I have altered - the candle on it's own wasn't enough to give me enough light, so I made myself a snoot and attached it to a flashgun. This was triggered in the same way as the other image.

Levels, white balance, overall contrast, etc were adjusted in Capture and the parchment effect and some burning of the green baize was made in PS to try and emulate the shading effect from the back of the candle.

The aim - as with the previous shot, was to try and create a kind of 'period' feel to this.

All comments and crit welcomed...!

Thanks

Chris

Definitely has the feel of authenticity. Lighting and composition are very pleasing. The wax running down the side of the candle is a nice touch. All around lovely.

I like the suggestion of an old master at work here. The lighting is good.

I agree - definitely a feel of authenticity here. I really like the light and the thought that a long-ago creative genius put his quill down for a moment.... great work!

Yes, a definate improvement. The lighting has more of a suggestion of candle light and using a quill instead of a pen helps too. Good work.

Chris, you're certainly dedicated and went to the trouble of getting the feather! I do think this is closer to authenticity, the small circle of dim light given by (or apparently so) the candle, and I like the fact it's all within the frame now. Jools' point in the last pic. about the writing is a good one - a little bit too neat and structured - you could imagine a tortured genius staying up all night by candllelight scribbling away and making corrections as he/she went..but it's hard to say whether that would actually detract from the image.

Goos work, keep it coming

Hi Chris,

Like this version a lot more. As Stephen says, it does have the look of authenticity about it. Plus, changing the lighting has given it more atmosphere. I can't think of anything more you could do to improve it!

Depending on your audience, and on how much of a perfectionist you (or they) are, you could research facsimiles of old musical manuscripts but that would probably be taking things a little far.

One thing that has just occurred to me, you could try making the paper look a little less perfect - strategic stains, ink blobs, etc. Just a thought.

Nice pic! Grin

Yes this is much more effective than the previous version. Nothing to add to what is said above. Mozart (my fave composer) would be pleased with this!!

Presumably you will now have it printed and hung on your wall? Smile

Chris I think you have made some significant and very good improvements to this image.

The light drop off add to the mystery/mood of the image.

I think it is a photo to be proud of. I hope you do too.

Thank you very much. Guess I need to see things with more of an analytical eye - when it was all pointed out with the other image, it kind of became glaringly obvious! Thanks again
