"The smells of Christmas are the smells of childhood"

The Rauchermann (smoking man) is an "incense smoker", the invention of toy makers in the Ore Mountains in Germany used to burn down an incense cone (Rucherkerzen).

The Ruchermann was first mentioned in 1850 and is now a common component in the German and Austrian Christmas tradition. The upper part of the wood figurine is hollowed out and put on top of the base which holds the incense cone. The cone smolders inside the hollow figurine and the smoke leaves via the figure's mouth.

Hundreds of kinds of figurines exist, traditionally displaying craftsmen of the region, such as foresters, peddlers, miners, and soldiers. According to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest Ruchermann in the world is in the Miniaturenpark Kleinwelka in Bautzen (near Dresden).
