'The Solo'

By goatster
Sometimes the ice is so thin any protection placed is phycological only. Gentle placements and a cool head are needed here.

Taken on my recent trip to Norway, the climber here is my good friend Eric Taylor climbing an unprotectable grade 5 route.

I think this is a superb image ... you've done well to capture the range of tones here, and the backlighting on the ice emphasises how risky ice climbing can be. Love it.

Goodness! What an amazing image. What an incredibly dangerous thing to do. I'd have maybe dodged the climber to bring out some highlights in him, but a wonderful composition *click*

Wow, not for people with vertigo. Great shot. I like the way he almost seems to be hanging on to nothing - like he's almost floating in the air. Excellent capture.

Thanks everyone, it is indeed a great sport.

Steff: I actually took the climber down a little to silhoette him against the sky/ice a little.

Very impresive - I like the way the ice is glowing and he is only just held on by such slender boot points.
