Hollyhocks come in a variety of colours, but mine were always white and pale pink, so when I saw these deep red ones, I immediately fell in love. I was sitting on someone’s brick wall waiting for a bus when I noticed them in their garden, so I waited for the flowers go to seed, then returned and furtively collected some whilst passing. This is the happy result. (I later met the owner when he was tidying his garden, and confessed to the seed theft, but he wasn’t bothered at all).
I now know that the disc-shaped seed case is known as a schizocarp

.
The epitome of cottage garden plants, the stately old-fashioned hollyhock will add some drama and exciting height to a garden.
Its showy 3” funnel-shaped flowers are borne in tall, erect racemes and will bloom for a long time in summer.
Their tall spikes are covered with blooms from top to bottom, and can reach heights of 9 feet!
