The Street Cleaners

By Suehh
These two make me laughGrin They are the regular street cleaners around my way. Now, don't get me wrong, I think street cleaners are invaluable. I mean, how many lawyers do we need?? But we can never, EVER, have enough street cleaners. And I think they should be paid a good wage for what they do. And these two, well, I see them every Saturday, standing in the same place have a cigi or ten, a coffee or several - for 40 minutes of so, and then they toddle off down the road to whoever knows where - and the rubbish is still lying on the pavement. Oh well, to snitch or not to snitch? That is the question. But as I have seen these time and time again for yonks, I don't think it will be me doing the snitching. I have even cleared up the rubbish off the road in front of them, though, and they just sort of looked at me as if I was crazy. Oh dear...

Well Sue,that's that off your chest,so my turn now !!
My problem is all this recycling malarkey.A splendid idea at first I thought, but when I got delivered a rather large sized booklet on the ''rules'',I do not think it is such a splendid idea at all.I am supposed to wash out the tin can.remove the top completely, and remove the paper labelling. For plastic bottles I am to throw away the top, rinse the bottle out and remove the paper labelling again !! Do they think I am supposed to waste my valuable day time telly viewing by spending time doing this ? And all Hell is broken loose if you accidentaly put the wrong type of recycling item in the wrong coloured plastic box.And Heaven forbid never make the dreadful mistake of mixing up your black and white newsprint paper with the coloured pages you get in the Womans Own magazine.I am all for saving the Planet but for goodness sake lets have a bit of common sense and get rid of these Space Cadets that thought up all this nonsense about recycling !!

Love your opening narrative up top, Sue, and these comments could apply to so many others: how often do we see a gang of chaps at road works, one actually wielding a tool (if you're lucky) with anything up to half a dozen doing everything but.
And, by golly, we could do with more street cleaners actually doing the job........the streets up here are always littered with rubbish, plastic bags, bottles, food refuse........what a dirty nation we are, so many chucking everything away at their feet.
I often winder what visitors from abroad must make of us regarding this.

PS........forget to say you have captured this moment (should that be 40 minutes) brilliantly........R.

Great pre narrative, and a very well observed, composed and capture image. True life imagery which works...

What a tremendous tale, Sue, shedding light not merely on your street cleaners but on the foibles of others - Mick's daytime telly viewing, for example. (I can seldom find anything to watch in the evening; as for daytime TV, I'd rather watch rust forming - which is what I always thought Mick got up to Blush)
The only street cleaners in our town are the volunteers who go out once a week when we remember . . . You two have parked their trolley right in front of a No Parking sign . . .
Thank you for your lovely comment about my b&w on that lass's excellent portrait yesterday - you have quite made my day/week/month!!!!!

snitch .....................or not........................................for me because they watched you pick up rubbish and did not say or do anything,,,,,,,,,a rare case where I would get message to the depot manager and get them to have a word before going to the council that don't work drop them in it !!!

Perhaps they have had a chat with elf 'n' safety and have been told that picking up/sweeping away foreign objects may be detrimental to their health, and could lead to an injury...
Guess you could have used a 30 second exposure on this one and not had a hint of motion blur!

I like this shot very much and your narration alone is worth the vote.

I suspect this is a universal problem -- having to clear trash out of the path of the street cleaners. Please don't tell me they leave their cigarette butts behind. :-(

Morning Molls. Nope. No updates. Though it is Saturday, even if about 4am or so.....can't sleep! And it is street cleaning day but I probably won't be around to see what they get up to this weekSad
