I keep meaning to ask you about how do or where do you position your lights I always liked how the studios did portraits of stars in 40's and 50's have you ever thought of posting a picture of a set up for want of a better way of putting it. Just a thought.

Thanks for the idea, Tosh!

I may have a chance to do just that tomorrow, if I remember to do it...

Lighting here is a studio flash off to the right, around 4 or 5 feet away, through a beauty dish (around 20" diameter, with honeycomb on it). Simples.

The angle is crucial - moving the model (or the light) slightly backwards/forewards alters how the shadows fall a lot.

I also frequently use a workman's light: I have four, two halogen (hot!) and two LED, one of which is battery-powered, and cost around 30 from my local electrical wholesaler. I keep it in the car as a powerful torch in case of problems at night. These lights give even harsher shadows than the beauty dish.

And I have posted one or two 'how it was done' shots in the past - they aren't in any special position or order, though. It's almsot always simpler than everyone thinks, apart from the exposure (balance of highlight and shadow) and the angles.
