Classical Greek caryatids were female, the Baroque period borrowed Atlas for the same architectural purpose - he is, I guess, rather more credible for holding up buildings. These, like all the sculptures at Delaval Hall, are less impressive sculpturally than they look, they are plaster moulded over a wire frame and the drapery is real cloth soaked in liquid plaster. You can see the internal structure where bits have dropped off...
