Merops apiaster was not common years ago in Italy.
For some years, the Species has been expanding, with increasing numbers of specimens on breeding sites, often near rivers.
The Bee-eater digs the nest (50 to 70 centimeters deep) in sandy soils and therefore prefers places where floods have eroded and uncovered the banks.
It also needs a large number of insects (in particular grasshoppers, wasps and dragonflies) to feed the chickens and therefore it needs large uncultivated fields rich in wild herbs.

I never get tired of seeing these birds they are such a joy to view , a stellar shot of this pair.
