This land was made for you and me

By kuipje
"sung by Woody Guthrie 1944"
Walking through the Reeuwijk country side again (stil).
As I said before this land was a real swamp, and after the French burned down the windmills it had return to a swamp again (well allmost). Living in this area was hard. People really had to do everything to survive.
To make a long story a bit shorter, this went on for many years (centuries). In 1890 they drain one of the lakes and, of course, build a dike around it. They didn't a good job because in 1925 one one of the dikes broke. The waterlevel between the "new" polder and the lake was several meters. Again the "new"polder was lake again.
But the question arose if the lakes shouldn't be drained completely. This discussion went on and on. Most people agree to do so. That was not a (real) point, the point was money. Who would have to pay?
All kind of calculations were made to prove the "new" land would be profitable. Only few people were talking about Nature (it was still in the '20, alomost nobody cared). After years of talking and taking the case to the goverment it was decided Not to drain the Lakes (was expensive in that time, 1930. In 1929 there had been the Wall Street Crash) Not only the Lakes remained but also two were added. Not from peat excavation but they needed the sand to build a highway and the sand was needed for the construction of a new quarter of Gouda.
This is, in short, the story of the Reeuwijkse plassen (plassen= little lakes)
Other V's more waterSmile
Hope you have a wonderful day, filled with love and sunshine.

Good to read the history of Holland's survival - ill divided world with droughts in places
and water where it isn't wanted.
