Thistle?

By oldgreyheron
I'm not sure exactly what this is. It is the seed head of some sort of thistle, but what is the star-like structure? Seen when I was walking near the Tees estuary at the end of Greatham Creek.

The star-like structure appears to be a final seed that has not blown away yet. At least, that's what I think it is Smile Carol

Is it the "skeleton" of the flower, long since gone?
