A pair of shots showing the two rival express locomotives of the LNER’s Sir Nigel Gresley designed A4 Class and the LMS’ Sir William Stanier designed Duchess Class. The A4 went on to outshine the Duchess for speed with the world speed record for steam of 126mph while the Duchess was always regarded as the more powerful. In the 1930’s the Duchess was originally streamlined as the A4 an example of which Duchess of Hamilton is now on show at the Railway Museum at York. Shown here are 60009 Union of South Africa and 6233 Duchess of Sutherland.
