Three Go Wall Climbing

By pamelajean
(The start of a mini series from Southampton).

OK, itís not FIVE, but a bit like an Enid Blyton adventure nevertheless.

Sitting beside The Bargate, a medieval gateway in Southampton, I watched these intrepid youths climbing up and down the wall.
Iíll admit to being worried about them falling, but found their mum, who said they do this often.

The Bargate was built c.1180, and constructed of stone and flint. Itís Grade 1 listed, constructed in Norman times as part of the Southampton town walls, and was the main gateway to the city.

2 pictures, the version, a different image, is to give you a wider view of the gateway side wall.

I was delighted with the response to my peonies picture, and with all of those lovely User Awards.

Pamela.

So brave to do that, I would be petrified they would fall too.
Looks like they are good at it though Smile

A great shot, with many memoriesÖ

My son used to love doing that on the Outer curtain walls of Kenilworth Castle, he used to copy adult climbing enthusiast who had all the proper gearÖ he used to scare me to death.
It was eventually stopped by English HeritageÖ.quite rightly..

Well at least the Bargate is being put to a good use - when we were last there in 2018 it seemed to be serving as the town's weekend overflow urinal, and I can't remember when we last saw the museum open. The area around the Bargate was derelict, but I have heard that it has picked up.
Terrific fun. Though I do always worry that those baggy shorts will fall down at an inconvenient moment... Wink

I have seen climbing walls deliberately built for youngsters to climb-- VERY scary idea-- but seems to be popular!

Good to see kids active - its quite a drop if one fell from the top - and yes the title does sound bookish.Smile

It is good to know the spirit of adventure is still active, Pamela. Great capture, with great colours and composition.

Well, they could have made it easier and added some steps when they built it!! 😁 Not something I was keen to do when I was a lad, always afraid of falling and breaking bones, something I was good at 😳 Two fine candids, Pamela, the lead has us intrigued as to how far they have to climb, but like the wider view showing more of the architecture 😃👍🏻

Excellent captures of them having fun Pamela.
