Your shot and story reminds me of an occasion when we were having a picnic at the Whangie (an interesting local geological cleft in the land) when another party arrived an sat down for a picnic too some short distance away. They had a collie dog and it attached itself to us rather than it's owners and kept bringing sticks to have thrown.
When me eventually moved off I wondered if it might follow us. but no, it decided it was time to return to it's own family.

She’s a lovely furry Lady and up for some fun.
We have just lost our “Furrikins” so any dog story at the moment
is dear to me. She has a lovely coloured coat, nice one Sandy......WinkWinkWink
