Time Floats By...

By DiegoDesigns
I have for quite some time been fascinated by visual impossibilities, in particular the work of Oscar Reutersvärd. Reutersvärd was born in 1915 in Stockholm. He was trained in arts by russian immigrant professor of Academy of Arts in St.Petersburg Michael Katz. In 1980 a series of postage stamps with three figures of Oscar Reutersvärd was printed in Sweden.

Although this triangular form is often referred to as the “Penrose Triangle” based on his work on the 1950's, the form was actually created much earlier in 1934 by Reutersvärd.

My version started out as a clock face, which once created in Photoshop, was triplicated and than distorted into the cube shape (Version 2). Each of the clocks was then placed onto its own layer (15 layers so far!) and then the sky (Version 3) was imported onto a layer behind. The water had to be done on two separate pieces to get the horizon further back than the reflection of the triangluar clocks (two more layers) and that's pretty much it. Some minor selective colour changes on an adjustment layer (now totalling 19 layers!) and et voilà.

You may wonder why I bothered, or think that I should get out more and you're probably right - but it's fair to say that I enjoyed this process and I'm happy with the result.

Thanks for looking and thanks for all the support on yesterday's offering...

I thought it was Escher (if that's the correct spelling) who did this first. Excellent piece of work but, as you say, you should get out more! Wink

Thanks for your kind comments on this Andy, Matt, Rog, Dave & Sarah. I know that Escher did do some work on star shapes in the late 40's, but this impossible triangle goes back a bit further. I'm pleased it's being well received. Cheers all.

an amazing and clever piece of work you have done this so well and it is well worth the hard work you put into it and the thinking behind its creation - on my shortlist

Many thanks for that Linda, much appreciated. It does take a while to see what's going on Sandy, thanks for the kind words of support.

Very effective, well planned and executed with precision. I like the nice 'crisp and all-in-focus' approach instead of misty gradients, wierd textures and subdued 'moody' colours which seem to be in vogue at present.

I thinks this is a dynamic picture or pictures. You are very clever and creative. I have been unable to get out for a while so I like you want to be creative with photography on photoshop and it is great fun. I love this piece and you must have spent ages doing it. Well done.

Thank Paul & Eric I'm glad you liked it. You can never really tell whether what you think is a good idea yourself, is going to float (excuse the pun) with a wider group. I'm chuffed to see people are liking it.
