Time to leave the beach

By pablophotographer
Real event and straight out of the phone camera. Moments before the thunderstorm. Clouds were building up, rain had started falling on the distant right, so it was wise to get out of the sea.
I did not remember seeing the sky as heavy before.
Does the picture look interesting without any manipulation?
P.S. It is hard to judge from the phone if it is totally horizontal.

Nice to see you uploading in the Critique Gallery again.

Three thoughts come to mind: This is subtle, subdued pastel tones, easy on the eye. For 'being there', feeling the breeze, seeing the light dance on the water, well this is how you saw it. To convey that feeling to someone viewing a small rectangle on a flat screen, I think a bit more contrast would give a better sense of depth and distance. Haze is difficult to convey, because it's precisely the qualities that we enjoy in reality (softness, lack of sense of distance, a feeling of disorientation) that can detract from an image.

Second thought - there's an awful lot of breadth, and landscape format leads the eye to explore it horizontally. But as you indicate this really is about the height and weight of the sky, and I want a format that allows my eye to travel instinctively upwards. I feel a crop coming on...

And finally, I'm sure you are aware that this needs a clockwise rotation!

Back soon, I hope...

It looks dull and flat, so it does benefit with some post processing; Im sure you can also do this in the phone cam if you wanted to.

The mod is almost entirely based on setting the black point to -66 using adobe raw; slightly warming, level, and crop,

Makes an interesting shot when the left side is removed I think.

Subtle as the tones are, this would look better against a black background. White makes it look duller...

I think standard members can have the white background only dudler.

Thank you all so far for your input.

I adjusted several parameters as horizon, contrast, exposure and clarity. I wanted to keep the island in the middle so I cropped from both sides. The rain appears on the right edge of the frame but on the moment the formation of the clouds above the island made me think ''they are going to get really wet over there''. My modification does not look exactly to what I saw at the moment as it appears darker but the mood gets presented righteously, I think.

OK - thanks for clarifying that - I didn't know.

In which case, maybe a heavy black border?
