To The Struggle Against World Terrorism

By TyChee
To The Struggle Against World Terrorism. – In the shadow of the resent events in Boston… I thought I would introduce this little known memorial to you. The title of this photo is its official name, but it is also know as the "Tear Of Greif" or the "Tear Drop Memorial". Now I pride myself in knowing my local architecture, but this one got by me and had been standing for 5 years before a friend took me for a ride and told me there was something I had to see. This 100ft tall monument was erected in one of the most out of the way locations one could find in New Jersey. Located in Bayonne at the end of a peninsula of what was once a military ocean terminal. It was if it was constructed in a place as it should never be seen. Finding it takes some effort and your GPS will probably not be much help. The location it stands in is rather cramped for its size. It is nestled between the water on one side and a large warehouse structure on the other. Standing in its shadow gives the viewer a feeling of awe and great emotion. If any of my EPZ friends finds themselves in the NY area an wants to pay a visit, I would be happy to give you a tour.

Here are a few facts:
- The artist is Russia born Zurab Tsereteli.
- At at cost of about $12 million, it was a gift from the people of Russia to the United States as a memorial to the September 11 attacks.
- It was originally offered to the township of Jersey City, NJ but they turned it down.
- It has been called one of the “Worlds Ugliest Statues” by Foreign Police Magazine while the New Yorker said from afar it looks like “a giant tea biscuit”. One the other hand some locals have called it “Pretty Impressive and a “breathtakingly Beautiful Creation”
- Recent local buzz has said it might be relocated to another location to make way for a shipping container storage yard.

Thanks for looking.
Ty

Ty, this is amazing. I grew up in North Jersey (Bergen County), and live in Philadelphia. My sister is in Glen Ridge and my Mom in Hackensack, and I have never known of the existence of this sculpture. It is breathtaking, and full of meaning. I truly get it. Thank you for sharing this.......and I would love to have you take me to see it on a future trip up. I come up frequently to visit my 90 year old mother.

And, a great think to look at in light of recent events. And, to think that the same day that the bombs went off in Boston, a bombing in Iraq killed 55 people. Sisters, brothers, parents, children..........perspective. What people do to each other.....for whatever cause, can be awful.

I think it's a very beautiful and meaningful monument, thank you for sharing this. To me it symbolises the tears of individual people, in a collectively broken world.

Hi Ty, This is awesome for me in different ways. As a composition it is strong, balance between memorial/flag pole, flage shape mimics aperture as does ball on top of pole/tear, figures give scale, soft clouds make M really stand out. The commentry is so interesting. Very touching that it came frome the people of Russia, this speaks volumes about the difference between people & politicians. Thank you so much for sharing this. Best regards, Si

Thank you for sharing this....far from being ugly, it is a very moving. I would be more than proud to have this in my neighborhood....if it is moved it should be moved to a place of prominence where it can be truly appreciated.

Have you put this on Facebook....I hope so, it should be shown to the world.

A fine set of images of this unusual looking sculpture. It is far from ugly when compared with some of the monstosities over here, like the Angel of the North for example!
