Toad (Mating) Ball. 1.

Spotted in a pond at Strathclyde Country Park, Lanarkshire. The first and only time I have seen this behaviour. Methinks this may be them making tadpoles.

I have looked at a great many pics of frogs to understand what is going on here, but none of them featured, or described this behaviour. Frogs mating is usually one on one.

So, still a puzzle to me.


Puzzle solved; thanks to Pam, ladynewbury. After reading Pam's comment I searched for info on UK toads, and, toads do mate one on one, but in the water, they also on occasion do this wild Mating Ball thing, which puts any threesome right in the shade. Here is a link to the most useful page I have found so far.

These toads look very similar to our Common Frog. The toads skin is more warty. So, thanks again, Pam.
